If the Big Data, AI and Machine Learning buzzwords no longer amuse you and you wonder (like everyone else) what is their practical application in your company? Please read on.
Most of the companies (SMEs) do not need to invest in Big Data tools. But your needs to focus on « light data » — addressing the issues of your organization using small data sets (hundreds of data points; not millions of data points needed in Big data corporate projects).
In the data projects we do, at Symantra, we use a analytics method, that is accessible and comprehensible to everyone in the organization.
You do not need to invest in Data Scientists and Data Engineers do leverage the power of your data.
Some of the small data in your organisation:
DON’Ts
Overlook the low hanging fruits in favor of glamorous big data (costly) tools that are not hands-on. Do not invest in data scientists and flashy technologies (Tableau, Oracle, …) to work on your data problems. It is an over-kill for your budget.
DOs
Define the business problem you want to solve, first. Not the tool first, otherwise your data project becomes an IT expert project. It creates dependency for a strategic topic. Once you identify your priorities, it won’t be hard to find small data opportunities and identify affordable + easy-to-use digital solutions.
Encourage your entire team to join your data initiative and empower them to put small data to work in their unique ways. When you get your all team onboard, you will see a more egalitarian workplace, with everyone being comfortable growing their data skills and contributing to data opportunities.
Here are the 3 steps to get started with small data:
DATA AUDIT.
Start to evaluate data, lying in silos, across departments and teams. Your staff should be able to tell you what data they use, how they are collecting them, where the data are stored, how frequently it is updated. Map out where your data is and how it is stored.
You need to have a detailed look at your information infrastructure and work processes. For instance, see what data lives only in one place, and what data lives across multiple sources and places. If your data is stored in multiple places, when they need an update, is it changed at all places simultaneously or not ? …
DATA UNIFICATION
Are the workflows efficient enough to update data across different tools and processes?
DATA INSIGHTS & INTERACTIVE VISUALISATION
Data analytics inspired by the expanded possibilities of smart design and technologies can help your organisation to make better, quicker and more efficient decisions based on evidence and insights.
The most innovative companies are putting the data at the core of their value proposition and services for their customers. And their complete team is empowered to use data in effective ways.
At Symantra, we help companies automate the data collection, aggregation, and visualization (industry data, social/economic/environmental data, leads, customer databases, …). We provide an easy and affordable interface so the complete team can contribute to data projects (no expert or data scientists expertise required).
